Updated October 14, 2021 by Amanda Bruce: While the Anne of Green Gables series is undoubtedly about a young girl who grows up and finds the family she has always longed for, a big part of that story is that Anne Shirley loves Gilbert Blythe. It takes the two of them a long time to be romantically involved, but part of the fun for the audience of the adaptations is seeing how this journey plays out. Although Anne was dropped off with an E after the third season, fans on Netflix can stream (and re-watch) to their hearts’ content.
Your instant connection
If there’s one thing fans need to know about Anne Shirley, it’s that her wayward nature can get her into trouble without her realizing. This is exactly what happens when she tries to make new friends at school at the beginning of the series. On the way to school, Billy Andrews (Christian Martyn) confronts Anne about the rumors she’s spread about his sister. Gilbert notices the altercation and defends Anne when they first meet.
Anne and Gilbert have a bond that cannot be broken. Gilbert is teased for talking to Anne, an orphan, but he doesn’t care. As he says to his friends: “A cute girl is a cute girl”.
Your closest friends will be the first to recognize their connection
Gilbert is never really shy about his admiration for Anne. Not only does he call her “cute” after meeting her, but he’s also a regular defender of her intelligence and outspoken nature, even when she frustrates him. When she finally warms up for him, he’s only louder. Anne, for her part, often denies that she is interested in him, but she can’t help but talk about him. Diana (Dalila Bela) and Bash (Dalmar Abuzeid) quickly recognize the chemistry between the two.
Diana tries several times to speak to Anne about her feelings for Gilbert, but she doesn’t urge, just suggests that Anne give him a chance. Bash, on the other hand, fully supports Anne as soon as Gilbert receives his first letter from her, excited to meet her and understand why Gilbert is so interested in her. They act very much as surrogates for the audience when they notice the chemistry.
Your academic competitions
In Montgomery Anne of Green Gables Book series, Anne and Gilbert are the best students at Avonlea School. They compete for top marks and are basically rivals.
This also applies in Anne with an E. In the first season episode “Tightly Knotted to a Similar String”, Anne and Gilbert compete against each other in a spelling competition. Gilbert keeps staring at Anne and it seems like he’s running the contest just to see how she wins. Although they are competing, they cannot deny the obvious spark between them.
In the finale of the first season, “Wherever You Are is My Home”, Anne meets Gilbert in Charlottetown. His father has passed away and Gilbert plans to leave Avonlea and Prince Edward Island.
Before that happens, Anne and Gilbert have one final meeting. They make the transition to become friends, and Anne even admits that she misses him at school. Gilbert stares longingly at Anne and the fans just knew that her story was not over yet.
Stay connected by letters
During the first half of the series’ second season, Gilbert is working on a ship. He travels the world and his absence feels right at home in Avonlea. Anne misses Gilbert, even if she doesn’t like to admit it. Meanwhile, Gilbert also misses his favorite redhead.
They stay connected by writing letters. Anne briefs Gilbert on everything that is going on in Avonlea. It takes a while to find each other, but they value each other’s words. This wouldn’t be the only time her letters were important.
An unforgettable Christmas
It’s Christmas time in the season two episode, “I Protest Any Absolute Conclusion”. Anne shocks everyone at school with her short haircut, including Gilbert, who comes home from his travels. Since Gilbert’s first Christmas will be without his family, the Cuthberts invite him and his friend Bash to spend the holidays with them, starting with the Cuthberts having a small extended family in Avonlea.
Gilbert surprises Anne with a present: a miniature dictionary. He wrote in it, “So that you can beat me fairly and honestly.” The gift pays homage to her spelling competitions and makes Anne blush and smile. When it is time for them to blow out the candles on the Christmas tree, Anne and Gilbert have a special moment.
Support each other’s future
In the finale of the second season, “The Growing Good of the World”, Bash marries his girlfriend Mary Hanford (Cara Ricketts). The story of Bash and Mary is new to the Anne Customization, but a change fans absolutely love. Not only does it better represent the diversity in the series, but their relationship also serves to expand that of Gilbert.
Outside the church, Anne and Gilbert apologize for always tearing each other down in school. Gilbert reveals his plans to become a doctor, while Anne tells him she wants to become a teacher. Anne is reassured to know that Gilbert supports her future plans. She starts to see him differently, maybe she feels the same feelings that he always feels for her.
The burgeoning romance of Anne and Gilbert is one of the main focuses of the series’ third season. Fans sought they finally admit their feelings. Despite Gilbert’s relationship with Winifred Rose (Ashleigh Stewart), which is clearly just an excuse to suppress his feelings for Anne, Gilbert and Anne flirted with each other throughout the season.
In “I Am Fearless And Therefore Mighty,” the Avonlea School practices how to dance for an upcoming barn dance. Gilbert flirts with Anne throughout rehearsal. There is so much romantic tension in this scene. Who wouldn’t want to have a dance rehearsal like this?
Build a good team
Whenever something important happens in Avonlea, Anne and Gilbert often team up to convince others to make a difference. Diana may be known as Anne’s best friend, but Gilbert is one of her closest allies. In the third season of the episode “A Strong Effort of the Spirit of Good,” Anne rallies the city to fight for justice after Josie Pye (Miranda McKeon) was molested by her boyfriend Billy. When Anne wrote an op-ed in the school newspaper, the city council threatened to close the newspaper.
Gilbert convinces everyone to stand up for Anne. When they successfully convince the city council to keep the newspaper, everyone celebrates. At this celebration, Anne and Gilbert have a private conversation. Gilbert mentions that they are a great “TEAM” which makes Anne laugh. You have nothing more to contend with. They stare each other in the eye and no one could deny the chemistry between them.
Confess your feelings through letters
Anne realizes that she loves Gilbert in the third season episode “A Dense and Frightful Darkness”. However, he is about to propose marriage to Winifred because he thinks it is “the right thing”. He is convinced that Anne does not love him. Hoping to prevent this from happening, Anne leaves a message at Gilbert’s house telling him that she loves him.
Unfortunately, Gilbert doesn’t see the note. However, he does not propose to Winifred as he cannot marry anyone unless it is Anne. Gilbert writes a love letter to Anne expressing his feelings. He tells her, “You are the dearest object of my affection and desire. You alone are the keeper of my heart … I am not engaged and I will not be unless it is about you, Anne. My Anne with E. You always were and always will be. ”Passed out.
The fans waited for Anne and Gilbert to finally kiss and confess their feelings to each other, this time in person. During the final scene of the season three finale, “The Better Feeling of My Heart,” Gilbert learns of Anne’s original letter and he escapes to her before they both go to college.
When they meet, they eventually kiss. They know each other’s feelings and will continue to develop their relationship. because Anne with an E Was canceled by Netflix after season three, this seems to be all viewers will get from Anne and Gilbert’s relationship. However, Anne and Gilbert are soul mates and will always be together. You are in “LOVE” no matter what.
