BatmanThe future is very busy for the next few years with a number of upcoming movies, TV shows, and even podcasts. Some of these planned projects have been long awaited, others have just been announced. One thing that makes these projects stand out is that each has a different actor portraying the Dark Knight, and sometimes they have more than one.
Casting such characters is nothing new – just like with James Bond or Doctor Who, audiences expect a new actor to take on the role. Batman was already an extreme example of this. His first big screen appearance came from Lewis G. Wilson in the 1943 Columbia series Batman, and his first audio appearance was in 1945 by voice actor Stacy Harris The adventures of Superman. Since then, many more actors have portrayed the enveloped crusader, with the character appearing in everything from radio plays to animated series and live-action TV and film to video games.
Many longtime fans of Batman may have a favorite actor who they believe created a definitive version of the role. As some of these actors put Batman’s cape and robe back on, new actors will bring new ideas to the character while paying homage to the many iterations that have taken place before. So here are all of the upcoming Batman renditions that have been confirmed so far.
Iain Glen – Titans Season 3
Batman was present throughout the first season of Titansportrayed by Dick Grayson’s fears, Wayne Manor, and embarrassing footage of a man in a batsuit, but no actor fully portrayed the man. Season 2 brought Iain Glen (game of Thrones) to play a senior Bruce Wayne as a mentor to Grayson (Brenton Thwaites). While Glen will return to his role as Batman in Season 3, it may be a brief appearance. the Titans The season 3 trailer annoys Batman for losing control while Glen’s character declares himself done and begs Grayson to take over the cloak and do better. It’s unclear whether this means Thwaites could take on the habit himself, but it seems unlikely as the show so far has focused on ex-Robin stepping out of his mentor’s shadow and just claiming the Nightwing title .
Robert Pattinson – The Batman
Although legacy of his role as Edward Cullen in dusk plagued Robert Pattinson for a long time, he has actively worked to distance himself from the franchise. His recent appearances in films as Henry Costin in The lost city of Z and Neil in principle helped solidify this, and the role of Batman is clearly the next step. While several current and upcoming renditions focus on an older, battle-worn Batman (Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Titans), The Batman will revisit the character’s youth while seemingly skipping repeating his origin story. The film will follow the character in his sophomore year as the Vigilant Crime Fighter, with plans for this to be the first in a Pattinson-fronted Batman trilogy and to strike a much darker, more realistic tone than many previous Batman outings. An HBO Max prequel series to take place during Bruce Wayne’s first year as Batman is also planned, but it’s unclear whether Pattinson will repeat his role.
Ben Affleck – The Lightning
The youngest actor to portray Batman for the big screen, Ben Affleck, will return to the role in 2022 The Lightning. Affleck previously had an odd relationship with the character as fans were initially outraged by his casting Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, but his performance received a positive critical response. After a short cameo-in Suicide squad (2016) and a leading role in Justice League, Affleck stepped away from The Batman Quoting health problems, which makes the film take a new, younger direction. After taking time to recover, Affleck’s return to the role alongside Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen / The Flash promises to further explore his past as he bonds with Allen about his mother’s murder. Given the positive response to Affleck’s Batman reunion in the Snyder Cut, his return to the real DCEU couldn’t come at a better time.
Michael Keaton – The Lightning
If the audience was surprised to hear that Ben Affleck would return to his role as Dark Knight after a few years of absence, the news that Michael Keaton would appear alongside him as Batman was a shock. Originally appears in Tim Burtons Batman (1989) and then back for Batman returns (1992), at the time of The LightningAfter the release of Keaton, Keaton has not been part of the franchise for over three decades. How will this gig work? As Barry Allen travels back in time to save his mother, his actions have unintended consequences for the future of his timeline, leading to the appearance of an older Batman (Keaton). Keaton’s appearance is retained Batman and Batman returns as canon, while the story beats from the other Batman films of the 1990s (Batman forever and Batman & Robin), in which other actors play the role. Keaton’s more recent superhero foray was in as the Vulture Spider-Man: Homecoming, and he seems ready to join Sony’s upcoming Vulture. to repeat Morbius.
Winston Duke – Batman unburied
DC will revert to the original format of the comic book adaptations as they announced an expanded deal with Spotify to produce radio plays based on many of their characters. The first of these to be revealed was Batman unburied. Winston Duke will take on the role of Batman himself in a modified version of the character’s narrative in which the character will be a forensic pathologist at Gotham Hospital instead of a billionaire playboy while facing a serial killer named The Harvester. Duke’s rise to fame came in another superhero mansion when he appeared in the MCU as M’Baku, the leader of the Jabari Black Panther before repeating the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. He is expected to return to that role Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Jeffrey Wright – Batman: The Audio Adventure
In addition to their deal with Spotify, DC has also worked on creating an exclusive HBO Max podcast about Batman. The Audio Adventures will hear Jeffrey Wright as Batman in a more comedic version of the franchise, supported by a supporting cast made heavily by Saturday night live Alumni. Jeffrey Wright’s film and television career is extensive, starring as Felix Lichter in Daniel Craig’s James Bond films and as Bernard Lowe in Western world. With no Marvel or DC credits before 2021, Wright is now stepping into the world of comic book adaptations at full speed, as he is currently setting The Watcher in Marvel’s acclaimed Disney + series What if…? and will also be James Gordon in The Batman, alongside the aforementioned Robert Pattinson as a vigilant protector of Gotham. That will make Wright the first actor to ever play both Gordon and Batman, a performance that may never be repeated.
Anson Mount – Injustice
injustice is an upcoming animated film based on the 2013 video game Injustice: Gods Among Us and the comic series Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year One. The story features a distraught Superman mourning the death of Lois Lane, who tries to take over Earth while other DC heroes try to stop him. Although Kevin Conroy from Batman: The Animated Series Fame, voiced Batman in the game that injustice Film casted Anson Mount to take over the coat. Mount recently starred as Captain Christopher Pike in Star Trek: Discovery and also appeared in Marvel’s short-lived non-MCU comic book adaptation In people as a black bolt.
Ethan Hawke – Batwheels
The parade of new Batman projects continues, this time via a new animated show for Cartoon Network and HBO called Max Impact wheels. Impact wheels has a pretty strange promise that is almost a combination of the Batman universe with Pixars cars Franchise. Batwheels focuses on the title characters, who are sentient vehicles used by Batman to fight crime in Gotham City. Ethan Hawke, Star of Training day, Sinister, Before sunrise, and dozens of other films and shows, this time Batman speaks.
