Chloé Zhao’s upcoming MCU film Eternals receives a PG-13 rating for “Fantasy Violence and Action, Some Language and Brief Sexuality”.
The upcoming movie from Marvel Studios, Eternal, received a PG-13 rating for Fantasy Violence and Brief Sexuality. Directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Eternal is the twenty-sixth feature film in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe with a high-profile cast that includes Gemma Chan, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie. The film is expected to introduce a host of new characters drawn from the more obscure side of the Marvel Comics lore, although it’s a fairly late entry into the franchise. After the box office hit of Marvel’s last movie foray, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, Disney recently confirmed that Eternal would get a theater-exclusive release.
An overwhelming majority of contemporary blockbuster films are rated PG-13. The rating is eclectic and allows studios to appeal to younger audiences while ensuring that older theatergoers are also entertained. This is certainly the case for the MCU, where every single motion picture has received a PG-13 rating since the franchise was first created. It now appears that Eternal will continue the tradition.
Movie reviews (above Marvel updates) has confirmed that Eternal received a PG-13 rating for “for imaginative power and action, some language and brief sexuality.” While the rating itself isn’t a surprise, the hint from is “short sexuality” is noteworthy when you consider that the franchise largely deviated from overt sexual scenes after Disney took over the studio. Ever since Marvel announced the dissenting warlord Kro as the movie’s antagonist, fans have been speculating on whether or not Eternal would touch the relationship between him and Thena (Angelina Jolie). The couple have a relationship spanning several centuries in the comics. Hence it is possible that the moment of “short sexuality” can refer to the relationship between Kro and Thena. However, given the sheer scale of the film, it’s just as possible that the scenes reference other members of the cast – from the trailers, most likely Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Ikaris (Richard Madden).
While Eternal‘Rating is not a world-shattering revelation, it is a reminder of how flexible the PG-13 rating is. The previous Marvel Studios films have all varied greatly in style and tone, but all share the same opinion. As the studio begins to incorporate edgier features such as: Dead Pool and X-mde in their film lineup, hopefully the PG-13 rating won’t limit the types of stories that can be told.
