God of War Ragnarök Narrative Director addresses the Angrboda controversy

After controversy over the dark skin of a God of War Ragnarok character, narrative designer Matt Sophos has spoken out against naysayers.

Matt Sophos, the narrative director of God of war Ragnarok, addressed the recent controversy surrounding a new character in the game. The upcoming sequel will continue the story of Kratos, the formerly angry main protagonist of the franchise, and his young son Atreus. The latest gameplay reveal for God of war Ragnarok suggests that the next chapter of the epic saga will be even bigger and more emotional than the last.

The full disclosure of God of war Ragnarok illuminates the journey that the upcoming sequel will take players on. The game will take place a few years after 2018 God of War, with the mystical storms of Fimbulwinter ravaging the world. Kratos and a noticeably older Atreus go into hiding, but Atreus wants to embark on a new journey to put a stop to the apocalyptic event Ragnarok. Along the way, the duo and their decapitated ally Mimir encounter all sorts of characters from all over Norse mythology. These allies and enemies include the iconic thunder god Thor, the Norse god of war Tyr, and one of the last surviving giants named Angrboda. Angrboda has an important place in Norse mythology and a close relationship with the god of mischief Loki.

While Angrboda made a fascinating revelation in the God of war Ragnarok Trailer, narrative director Matt Sophos was forced to address the character’s appearance controversy via Twitter. The game version of Angrboda, played by Laya DeLeon Hayes of Grey’s Anatomy, is a young dark-skinned girl. Some began to criticize the character’s appearance after the reveal trailer, claiming that her dark skin was inconsistent with the game’s Norse mythology. Sophos’s response to these critics has been thorough and insightful, reminding fans that the God of War Franchise is a modern take on old fantasies.

In addition to Angrboda, Thor’s model in God of war Ragnarok has received some backlash from fans and critics of the upcoming title lately. 2018 God of War sets up the famous god of thunder as a powerful opponent for Kratos and Atreus, with a hidden scene after the credits of the game that causes a clash between the deities. However, Ragnarok‘s design for Thor portrays a massive blank with a beer intestine and not the typical representation of the Nordic god as a chiseled piece. Like the design by Angrboda, the model by Thor also reflects Sony Santa Monica’s unique perspective on the Nordic myth and its essential characters.

the God of War Series adapts and modernizes classic myths and translates these works for a modern audience. Angrboda’s dark complexion in God of war Ragnarok should therefore not be an issue, especially due to the character’s status as a magical being and not as a historically correct resident of Scandinavia. The last remaining giant is sure to play a major role in this God of war Ragnaroks story, and the game’s developers have stated that Laya DeLeon Hayes brings the character to life beautifully.
