Why Otis & Ruby Get Together in Season 3 of Sex Education

In season three of Sex Education, Otis goes out with Moordale-based bad girl Ruby. Here’s what brought them together and why it wasn’t just about connecting.

Educational classes Season 3, currently streamed on Netflix, introduced the new couple Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield) and Ruby Matthews (Mimi Keene), but why did these two team up in the first place? Fans of the show have waited nearly two years since the season two finale to see if Maeve would find out about Otis’ voicemail and finally admit that she loved him, too. Instead, the season three premiere revealed that Otis had found a way to deal with his heartache: having casual sex with the most popular girl at Moordale Secondary.

The foundation for this strange couple was laid in season 2 when Otis lost his virginity thanks to a drunken affair with the leader of the Untouchables. The two were struggling with a possible fear of pregnancy, and Ruby confided in Otis about her less-than-perfect personal life. Otis was seriously concerned that Ruby was okay, and she thanked him for checking in and said that most guys don’t. Although the Netflix series originally established Ruby as a mean girl, it didn’t emasculate or ridicule Otis for being a virgin. The chemistry of the two shows how Educational classes explores the many ways people form intimate relationships and sometimes inexplicable emotional connections.

Otis’ motives for dating Ruby are initially fairly transparent: he benefits from all the perks of casual sex with a hot girl without any strings attached. He can’t help basking in Eric’s admiration when his best friend finds out that Otis fell asleep in Moordale’s innermost circle. Believing Maeve rejected him, Otis gets a much-needed ego boost from Ruby’s attention while fulfilling a similar need in Ruby. She said Otis in Educational classes Season 2 that when she’s sad, she makes out with nerdy guys “Because they think they’re in love with me, which feels great.” Despite her social status, Ruby needs confirmation that she is attractive and desirable. Instead of making a fool of herself by her classmates for choosing Otis, Ruby tries to change him. However, your feelings for him deepen as he stands up for himself. “She is [Ruby] not used to opening up and taking into account other people’s feelings so I think it changes them a lot in this situation. “ Keene told TVLine.

None of Educational classes Season 3’s new or returning characters are one-dimensional, although that is how they may start out initially. Ruby really falls in love with Otis for not being like other guys, and Otis learns that while Ruby acts like she’s very stylish and devoid of substance, like everyone else, she struggles with feelings of isolation. Ruby rules Moordale with an iron fist because she feels completely powerless in the face of her father’s illness.

Butterfield told TVLine explained what brought his character and Ruby together. “Otis and Ruby are really bringing something new out of each other. I think that’s why they kind of get along because they’re basically very different people, but their energies seem to be working.” he said. Ruby learns to be vulnerable, even if it means being hurt, and Otis realizes that very rarely sex is casual. Even though Educational classes Season 3 encompasses some of the tropes of sex comedies of the 80s, the slapstick elements never overshadowing the message that sex is not a joke.
